Robert William Cumberbatch (1821–1876) was a British diplomat. He held the post of Consul General in the Ottoman Empire. ==Biography== He was born in Tunbridge Wells. His father was Abraham Parry Cumberbatch (1784–1840), by his wife (13 April 1819) Caroline Chaloner (2 October 1788 – 10 October 1840).〔(Rootsweb )〕 He was the father of Henry Alfred Cumberbatch and both men held the post of Consul General in Turkey. Robert William Cumberbatch was Consul General from 1864 to 1876 (he died in office in Smyrna).〔(Levantine Heritage )〕 His grandson was Henry Carlton Cumberbatch, his great-grandson is actor Timothy Carlton, and his great-great-grandson is the actor Benedict Cumberbatch. Cumberbatch was married twice. In 1843 he married Ellen Lloyd in Winkfield, Berkshire, and in 1853 he married Louisa Grace Hanson in Constantinople, Turkey.〔(Ancestors of Charles Anthony Wratislaw )〕 Cumberbatch went to Constantinople in June 1845 as secretary to his half-brother Abraham Carleton Cumberbatch and became Acting Second Consul.
